Is it in a container? If so,it should say on the label.

You"re probably buying this from a farm;I assume. If thats the case,it only has a shelf life of about 10 to 30 days and the milk that is used is either from a cow or a goat with very low quality. More then likely then it is not pasturized or anything else.

Is this the white soft cheese similar to Bree???

If thats the case then the cheese uses raw milk but the cheese is aged for a period of 30 - 60 days so that the acids and salts in the cheese kill the potentially harmful bacteria such as listeria, E. coli and salmonella.

If its coming from a farm,I doubt very much it has been aged for 30 to 60 days.

so no one knows for sure? no. it doesn't come from a label. I'm sure it's from a farm. there are two common types. one is softer and crumbles easily. The other, Paria, is a little firmer. I have no idea about being aged. I don't want to take a risk if it can have listeria. Hummm. I guess I will have to ask where I buy it. Better safe than sorry, but I'd really like to be able to eat it. Thanks for the comments.

If there is a web address on the lable you could e-mail the company and ask then what process they use in making the cheese. If it's close see if they'll give you a tour of the farm?

Anuta mentioned that she gets her milk delivered from a little man that gets it right from the farm (or something of that sort). We (someone) can to the conclusion that the product was in no way treated and that may be a problem.

I would venture a guess that it is pretty much the same for your cheese. If it were treated it would say on the package.

Don't know how you want to use this cheese but if you cook/bake it you'd be fine.

I have a question off topic. My wife and I ate cheese recently from a goat, and we both got really sick. I had high fevers, sour stomach, and everything. Can this happen from goat cheese?
I've been all over Peru, just to name a few places I have been to Oxapampa, Pozuzo, Cusco, Pata Pata, Grau, Ancash, Tarma, Machu Picchu, Ica, Pisco, Abancay, and many more places. If you have any questions about these places feel free to ask me :).

If the product you consume is raw or un/under cooked then yes!

If the cheese was made with milk from a goat you've got to ask, was the tit cleaned in any way when they collected the milk? Was the container that it was collected in clean?

What bacteria does the milk contain that was not killed off by heating it/properly?

How was this product handled after/during manufacturing? How was it shipped/stored?

You’re not in Kansas anymore.

Sometimes I don"t believe what I read on this forum and this is one of them. 100% I have to agree with David on this one. Where is your common sense people when you buy this stuff from a vendor or a farm. Do you just assume the products are safe? Don"t assume,do some homework or just buy from a grocery store. Sometimes buying from the grocery store does not mean you"re safe either. Just like in the states there are recalls on meat with e coli. Just remember, you are in a 3rd world country and nothing should be taken for granted here, especially that all foods are safe. You members are suppose to be intelligent,so use common sense when shopping. If in doubt, ask JAT because he knows the ins and outs of the sanitary conditions here in Peru. Hope you all have or had a very nice day!!

Yikes! Was it Fiebre Malta (or Brucellosis)? I never ate goat cheese while growing up in Peru, my mother would not allow us. I had Feta cheese for first time when I moved to the USA. Hope you feel better, but did you see a doctor?

take care!

I spent time on a farm as a boy and we made cheese, butter, and cream. If you do not allow a cheese to "age" you are not going to allow the curd to seperate from the whey and you will have a watery mass that is commonly known as cottage cheese.

BTW ... to QUANTUM for the Monty Python on cheese!!!

Is this true? Born American? That dammed impostor! Thanks for the insight/lesson.

Steven, did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today? I did see the Broadway musical and while it was OK I'm not a big fan of his shtick.

But I do enjoy Abbot and Costello comedies, music sung by Dean Martin, a clarinet played by Benny Goodman or most anything that Glenn Miller recorded. It doesn't mean we're stuck in the 40's and 50's just that my parents had a positive influence on my tastes while growing up.

I love Led Zep, the Stones, Who and a bunch of other guys from the 60's also. Thank God I didn't pick up the bad habits they propagated via the music they produced.

No,not the wrong side of bed today. When somebody gives up their citizenship to the U.S.,they are crap in my book. Regardless of that fact,I still don"t care for the guy. I also enjoy your up above musicals and what not,but this has nothing to do with giving up your U.S. citizenship.

Sorry I missed your point on the citizen thing. I agree one should not be giving up there citizenship but would like to know his reasons and thoughts behind the move.

On a side thought here, is it possible that back then you had to give it up as duel citizenship was not allowed?
