Do I Need A Return Flight Ticket To Be Allowed To Enter Peru?

I was told that I will only be allowed to enter peru (on a tourist visa) if I have a ticket for a return flight. As I am planning to stay between two and four months, but can impossibly tell for how long exactly, I don't have a return ticket yet. Does anyone of you know how to deal with this problem?

Is it possible to just make an online flight reservation, print out the confirmation email to show at the airport and cancel the flight again? Have you ever done that, and do you happen to know where I could make such a reservation without paying any fee for it?

Or is it possible to come without a return ticket anyway, which would be easiest of course?

Thanks, Chrissi

Why dont' you try to change your ticket to an OPEN Ticket, you will pay maybe another $200 - 300 which is cheaper than getting a return ticket. (We usually get this type of ticket for my parents since they stay there for 3-4 months)

I already have a one-way ticket to peru I did not get an open ticket because the county I'll be flying to afterwards is not the same as the one I start from, so I need to purchase one-way tickets anyway...

Hi Chrissi

i've flown into Peru about 6 times and enterd by boat once and have never been asked to show evidence of flights out of peru, even though i always have had tickets out.
according to the books it says that you need proof of a departure ticket or evidance of means of payment for the flight out, which can be a visa card or bank statements.

another small point you mention your thinking of staying for 3-4 months, you'll only be able to get a maximum of 90 days on entry so you'll either have to leave peru within the 90 days or get an extension for your visa. see other posts for details of how you do that.

andy

andy,

i know that i would need to extend my visa if i decided to stay for more than 30 days. i'm already doing research on how to do that.

i guess the safest way would be to just book a flight and print out the order confirmation e-mail (even if i had to pay cancelation fees). but still, the big question remaining is: will the order confirmation (which will of course not be an actual ticket, as i will have cancelled that by then) be accepted if i am really asked to show my return ticket?

regards, chrissi

When my wife and daughter came down two years ago (they flew separately from me and my boys) they had only one way tickets. They were not allowed to board the plane with one-way tickets, but all they did was call the travel agent and make a reservation for a return flight. Once they arrived in Peru they simply called the agent back and cancelled the reservation.

Hm... I guess I will have to book a flight back then. But all agents I found so far demand 10% storno fees, even if you cancel immediately. Anyway, I guess I'll have to afford it. Or what agent did your wife and children make the reservation with, if they didn't have to pay anything at all?

I wish I knew, but I wasn't with them. Likely, it was made through my in-laws agent (they were traveling together), and my in-laws are Assembly of God missionaries, so I'm sure it was made through AG (Assemblies of God) in Springfield, MO (their headquarters), which is why they didn't have to pay anything.

Sorry...

Hi Chrissi,
I went to Peru last year and after buying a one-way ticket was also told that they might not even let me board the plane if I don't show a return ticket (from Canada). So I simply bought a one-way return ticket through the website of my airline (Air Canada), I made sure that this ticket was refundable (it was pretty expensive) and then reimbursed it in the Air Canada office in Lima.

About extending the visa, it's really not complicated. Normally at the entry, they give you a visa for 90 days (if not, you can ask them), and then if you stay less than 180 days, you will simply pay the 1$/overstayed day fine when you exit. There's no need to renew anything while in Peru, it seems that some people tried to do it and it was pretty complicated. I just paid the fine at the airport after 5 months in Peru. When you exit make sure they don't charge you more than what you overstayed, they tried to do it with me, when I pointed it out to the agent, he agreed that he made a "mistake" (he had a computer which displayed the dates and I think even calculated the amount).

Anuta,

Thanks for the tip with Air Canada! I will check their website and maybe just buy a ticket from Lima to Canada (I guess it does not matter where the flight goes to as long as it shows that I am planning to leave Peru again, right?) and then cancel it again.

I already heared that paying the overstay fee is the cheapest and easiest way to stay longer than my visa allows me to. I guess this is what I will do if necessary.

Cheers, Chrissi
